Building the Small Pavilion
I’ve never built a building before so this one was a little crazy. I bought 5 or 6 pole building books and read them all. Even so, you’re still a little weary about building something this big. I drove around to all my local parks and took a look at how they built their pavilions. This is a good idea because then you can see what size rafters they use and the spacing for your area’s snow and wind load. After about a year of researching I designed my pavilion and went out to build it.
Pavilions are pole buildings. This type of construction means that there is no concrete slab or footer to bolt the structure to. With a pole building you sink poles into the ground and surround the poles with concrete. As you build your structure around the poles it forms a tight box.
The small pavilion is 9’X9’ and has a built in picnic table. The rafters are 2X4’s spaced every 16 inches. I used 4X6’s for the poles. I could have gotten away with 4X4’s but there’s not much more cost in buying a 4X6’. The poles are 36 inches down into the ground and surrounded by concrete to about 4” from the top of the ground. Everything is pressure treated. The roof sheathing is 1/2" pressure treated plywood. For the floor I laid down 2X4’s and filled them in with gravel.
All in all it cost about $800.00 to build.
