Building Habitat
As far as habitats go if you build it they will come. Animals need two things, shelter to protect them and raise their kids and food to feed themselves and their kids. If you have either you’ll get wildlife if you have both you’ll get tons.
Building a pond is probably the number one wildlife attractor of all time. You don’t have to build a big pond. Even a backyard ornamental pond will attract drones of animals.
High grass is a perfect habitat for snakes (yuck), mice, and rabbits, and is easy to make. Just don’t cut the grass for a month and you’ll be all set.
Low grass habitat is good for geese (if near a pond) and groundhogs. Some birds like robins and bluebirds LOVE low grass areas.
Brush is a big attractor of rabbits and other furry animals. It’s easy to build a brush pile, just start stacking up bushes and tree limbs that fall onto the ground.
Sunflowers are a great food source and they are easy and cheap to plant. Till an area and go to the store and buy a 50 pond bag of sunflower seed for birds. Spread the entire bag out on your plot and drive your tractor over it a few times. In no time you will have a billion sunflowers.
Bird Boxes are another easy way to provide habitat and are fun to make, especially if you have kids.
You can build a mouse house by simply getting a bale of hay and leaving it on the ground. In a week or two you’ll have a few families of mice move in.
If you have a pond already building a floating platform is a great way to provide shelter for the fish below and a safe haven for turtles or geese.
Whatever wildlife habitat you build, get a good pair of binoculars and a log book and keep track of the animals that come and go.
